Daniel Arcus Incus Ululat Higgs is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of Daniel Higgs the maxim rings truer than ever. His art is of the cosmos, we on Earth merely lucky that it happens to be confined to our atmosphere, in our lifetime.

Higgs is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity.

In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band. On Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot, Higgs weaves meditative, casually ruptured drones using acoustic and electric guitar, upright pianos, banjo and jew’s harp, recorded entirely at home on cassette recorder. He pairs the music with a series of paintings that call to mind religious iconography passed through the disfiguring surrealism of Miro.
Higgs has wedded his music and his visual art into a singular being, meant to be encountered as a conjuring force similar to that of the tarot experience. The yggdrasil is the great tree of Norse myth that connects all worlds of cosmology. Passing into Christian folklore, the tree is said to connect heaven and earth. In his relentless pursuit of the indivisible, Higgs travels up and down this spine and hatches a new transubstantiation of sound and image into life-form.

Expo ’70 is the main driving improvisational essence of Justin Wright.

Having started the project in Los Angeles in 2003, Wright has pushed his?project to new levels, releasing a number of albums as cdr’s and 2?full-length albums.

Expo ’70’s first album “Animism”, which debuted in 2007?on Kill Shaman, is an eclectic mix of krautrock, ambient drone, space?exploration and minimal compositions. Comparisons range from Brian Eno, Ash?Ra Tempel, A.R. & Machines, SunnO))) and Earth, but not directly sounding?like any of those artists in their entirety.

Der in Belgien lebende Musiker Paul LaBrecque spielt auf wackeligem Boden stehende Ritualmusik. Sie klingt erschlafft, primitiv, irgendwie abgenutzt, als würde sie im Schlurfschritt immer wieder am Opferstein gerieben. Die Musik gefällt nicht mit Könnerschaft und Kompositionskunst, sie macht nur Sinn innerhalb einer bestimmten Zeremonie. Dort befeuert und unterstützt sie die vor langer Zeit festgelegte Abfolge der Riten, denn nur das Ritual ist wichtig, nicht die Musik.

Davor gibt es noch einen Film mit Livemusik von Paul.

Heaven And Earth Magic

Eine einstündige Filmcollage aus Abbildungen alter Lexika. In allegorischen Bildern und mit teilweise alchemistischer Symbolik werden magische Handlungen vollzogen, die in drei Zyklen eine Art spirituelle Reise ergeben. Harry Everett Smith ist vor allem für seine Anthology of American Folk bekannt, die der studierte Anthropologe 1952 veröffentlichte und damit das Blues & Folk Revival der 50er und 60er Jahre entscheidend mitprägte.

Der amerikanische Gitarrist Paul LaBreque begleitet den Film live.

Der Name U.S. Girls impliziert eigentlich eine Band.Doch U.S. Girls ist das Soloprojekt von Meghan Remy. Sie und eine Vielzahl an Equipment (Mikrofone, eine ruinierte Drum Machine, ein fehlerhaftes Vier-Spur-Mischpult, ein altes Magnet-Tonband und einiges mehr an eher altertümlichen elektronischen Geräten) produzieren einen Sound,  der irgendwo in der Nähe von Lo-Fi- und Garage-Bands wie Suicide, No Age, Times New Viking und LA Vampires einzuordnen ist. Ganz klar hat sie sich schon nur von ihrem nicht mehr ganz modernen Equipment dem Lo-Fi verschrieben. Doch man täte ihr unrecht, stellte sie man einfach in dieser Ecke ab. Sie sagt selber, dass Lo-Fi nichts bedeute,  solange sich unter dieser Bezeichnung nichts tue. Es wolle ja niemand statischer Musik zuhören. So ist es nur logisch, dass sich Meghan Remy mehr vom Songwriting eines Bruce Springsteen (man höre sich nur ihr grossartiges Springsteen-Cover von „Prove It All Night“ auf ihrer ersten LP „Introducing…“ an.) und den Arrangements von 60s Girl-Groups inspirieren lässt,
als von den Noise-Experimenten ihrer „Genre“-Verwandten.

Wir freuen uns das der belgische Gitarrist Bram Devens aka Ignatz den Abend noch bereichert.Seine Soloarbeiten und auch das mitwirken bei Projekten wie Sylvester Anfang könnten dem ein oder anderen ein Begriff sein… “George Herriman created Ignatz in 1910. It was a vicious mouse in the comic Krazy Kat. Ignatz’ favourite occupation was throwing bricks at Krazy Kats head, who thought it was a love declaration from the mouse. The Brussels based artist Bram Devens uses Ignatz as his alter-ego for his own pile of bricks. Mind frying songs wrapped with effects and driven by improvisation and spontaneousness. Ignatz released his first three full albums on KRAAK, followed by a best of compilation of his cassette releases (on labels such as Scumbag Relations, Taped Sounds, Imvated, Goaty tapes etc). Other work was released on Staalplaat and Conspiracy.”

Das US-amerikanische Instrumental-Duo „Blues Control“ unternimmt mehr oder weniger ausladende Wanderungen in Kraut- und Bluesrock-, Ambient- und „Minimal Music“-Landschaften, um doch immer wieder zum Ausgangspunkt „Noise“ zurückzukehren. Dabei sind sie mit spärlicher Ausrüstung wie Gitarre, Keyboards, Piano und Loops unterwegs und können manchmal auf prominente Reise-Begleiter wie Kurt Vile zählen. Nach Veröffentlichungen auf Sub Pop und Siltbreeze Records wird ihr neues Album „Valley Tangents“ im Juni bei Drag City erscheinen.

Der 1943 in Philadelphia geborene Laraaji studierte zunächst Geige, Piano und Posaune in New Jersey und anschließend Komposition in Washington. Anfang der 1970er Jahre entdeckte der Musiker in einem Leihhaus eine Zither und funktionierte sie zu einem elektronischen Instrument um, dem er meditative Klänge entlockt, indem er es mit Schlagzeug-Besen bearbeitet, wie eine Gitarre nutzt oder sphärisch-elektronisch klingen lässt. Ende der 1970er Jahre sah Brian Eno den stark an fernöstlicher Mystik interessierten Laraaji zufällig im Washington Square Park spielen und nahm daraufhin für seine Ambient-Serie die Platte „Day of Radiance“ mit ihm auf. Auch mit Bill Laswell zusammen spielte der Afro-Amerikaner schon eine LP ein. Über seine 2011
auf CD erschienene Kooperation mit „Blues Control“ schrieb das Musik-Portal Pitchfork: „Der Generationen-Graben zwischen den hyperaktiven Avantgarde-Noise-Musikern und dem fest in sich ruhenden Elder Statesman des New Age ist weit geringer als angenommen.“

VOM GRILL  alias Dennis Tyfus aus Antwerpen sollte den Slowboybesuchern bekannt sein.Eine Ausstellung seiner Siebdruckposter fand im Jahre 2009 bei uns in der Galerie statt.Sein Label Ultra Eczema sollte Plattensammlern ein Begriff sein.Mit Vom Grill überrascht er jedesmal seine Zuhörer mit neuen Ideen…wir sind gespannt!

STARE CASE sind Nate Young und John Olson von den Wolf Eyes.Sie gehen mit ihrem neuen Projekt weg vom Krach und wandeln auf den Spuren von Throbbing Gristel…ihre Soloauftritte bei uns in der Galerie sollten einen Vorgeschmack geben.

DANIEL HIGGS war Sänger der legendären Dischord Band Lungfish und hat nach deren Ende in einigen Projekten gesungen und gespielt.Nun ist er seit einiger Zeit Solo unterwegs.Mit seinen eindringlichen und packenden Auftritten hat er sich in den letzten Jahren uns immer wieder begeistert.Wir sind froh nun auch in Düsseldorf eine Gelegenheit zu haben ihn zu hören!
